RFLVFD Alert System

When fire or other danger threatens, Red Feather Lakes will implement a “weather advisory ” flagging system  to keep you as up to date as possible.

Flags will be posted at:
     * Red Feather Super
     * Ponderosa Realty
     * Trading Post

Here’s what the flags mean:

GREEN  PENNANT – There is a fire or other danger in the area. Gather your emergency supplies and PREPARE, for example:
  • Begin listening to news reports. Stay alert.
  • Gas up your car.
  • Charge your cell phone.
  • Buy fresh batteries for flashlights and radios.
  • Notify your family. Assemble mementos and valuables you'll want to keep safe. Collect items for a go-bag (such as water, food, warm clothes, simple tools.)
  • Keep pets near. Begin transporting large animals to safer locations.
  • Review potential evacuation routes. (Click here to see them)
  • Move porch furniture, propane grills and any other objects off the decks and into the garage or away from the house. Clear debris and woodpiles from under the deck.
  • Assemble supplies to cover large windows and any other openings such as attic and ground vents with plywood.
  • Disconnect garage door openers.

YELLOW PENNANT – PACK your car and be ready to leave at a moment's notice
  • Call 970-962-2170 to receive Larimer County emergency updates and shelter information. This is especially important if you don't have a landline phone at your property.
  • Pack everything in your car, leave keys in the ignition.
  • Move drapes and furniture away from the windows. Shut heavy drapes.
  • Close (but don't lock) all interior & exterior doors and windows.
  • Turn off propane at the tank.
  • Wet down your roof, areas under and around decks and all trees & shrubs within 15 ft. of your house.
  • Seal windows, attic and ground vents.
  • Open the damper on your fireplace but close the fireplace screen.
  • Turn off gas and pilot lights.
  • Turn on outdoor and indoor lights so the house is easier to see in heavy smoke.
  • Connect a hose to the outdoor faucet and leave ladders in plain sight so firefighters can re-treat your house if needed.
  • Resist the temptation to unpack until notified that it is safe to do so.

RED PENNANT – Don’t wait for a call, GO! Evacuation is now in process, you must leave immediately. Sirens will sound. If you have received information on routes to follow, do so.  If you haven't, don't panic, just follow the main flow of traffic.

  • Close all doors inside your home to prevent drafts.
  • Put a rag on the front door handle so we know that you have left and no one is inside.
  • Call 970-962-2170 to receive emergency updates.
  • When you are safe, notify relatives and local officials that you have left your home and where you can be reached.

Remember that no material item is worth a human life.  You may not have time to do anything
but leave immediately. When the sirens go off you must get into the car and go.

Things to Do When Returning Home After an Evacuation:

  • Check the roof and the attic immediately for hidden burning sparks.
  • Watch for flare-ups in and around the house for several hours after the fire.
  • Check with local building officials to verify building codes and recommendations.
  • Determine the potential for flooding and the need for erosion control.
